Why Was This New Regulation Implemented?

DigiLocker has been implemented in the passport application process to not only speed but also to improve efficiency. Passport Seva Kendras (PSK) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSK) have been deployed in several locations at the same time to decrease the requirement for physical document verification.

What Is DigiLocker?

One of the primary efforts under the Digital India plan, Digital Locker, aims to eliminate the need of physical papers and enable the exchange of e-documents with Passport Seva through a process that verifies the “authenticity” of the documents online. The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is in charge of its upkeep. Users will also be able to access it whenever and wherever they need it, such as their driver’s license, mark sheets, car registration certificate, and other important papers.

It is simple to open a DigiLocker; all you need is your cellphone or Aadhaar number. Your mobile/Aadhaar number will be verified by issuing an OTP (one-time password) and establishing your security PIN for 2-factor authentication. This will initiate the creation of your DigiLocker account. If you wish to make changes to DigiLocker, you must first make changes to Aadhaar.

The Ministry has officially approved the use of Aadhaar papers for online application submission using DigiLocker. Furthermore, any form of document or certificate, such as an Aadhaar card, a PAN card, a passport, or a voter ID card, can be saved in DigiLocker.
