“Aadhaar Linked Voter IDs”: Cabinet Gives Nod

On Wednesday, Union Cabinet approved a bill on Electoral Reforms. The bill will help in ruling out problem of multiple enrollments by allowing users to link Aadhaar to Voter ID.

However, it will be on voluntary basis for voters to link their Voter ID Card with Aadhaar Card.

Apart from issue of multiple enrollments, Election Commission has pushed the bill for two more provisions.

Bill will allow those exercising their franchise for first time to get as many as four chances to register them in a year as a voter. Presently, only those who have turned 18 by January 1 can register themselves as voters only once.

Young Voters

The electoral law will also be turned gender neutral for all service voters. Currently wife of an Indian Army man can be registered as a service voter. But, husband of an Indian Army woman cannot be registered as one.

The bill will be introduced in Winter Session of the Parliament.

Cabinet nod for the bill comes before 2022 Assembly Elections in Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur. It might increase the voting turn-out.
