Jio, as per a report, will make all off-net domestic calls free starting from January 1, 2021.
“Honouring its commitment to revert off-net domestic voice-call charges to zero, as soon as Interconnect Usage Charge (IUC) charges are abolished, Jio will once again make all off-net domestic voice calls free, starting 1st January 2021,” the company said in a statement.
For the unaware, off-net calls are placed from the phone of one operator (like Jio) to the phone of another operator (like Airtel). On-net domestic voice calls (Jio to Jio) have always been free on the Jio network.
Currently, customers are charged 6 Paise per minute for making calls from Jio to off-net numbers due to the IUC regime. IUC or Interconnect Usage Charge is a cost paid by one mobile telecom operator to another when its customers make outgoing mobile calls to the other operator’s customers.
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has now removed the mandatory implementation of IUC.
Jio has earlier said that it will implement free calls from Jio on all networks once the telecom regulator abolishes IUC and today has lived up to its promise.
“Jio stands firm on its commitment to make the common Indian the beneficiary of advanced technologies like VoLTE,” the company said in a statement.
Jio’s New Year gift to its customers come amidst complaint of protestors, protesting against the farm laws, in Punjab vandalising thousands of Jio’s mobile towers in the state. As per the reports, over 1,500 mobile towers have been vandalised by miscreants in Punjab in recent days.
