Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghi has reportedly sought a meeting with Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meet ongoing in Moscow. The develeopment comes amidst the ongoing standoff between India and China in Ladakh.
Both the ministers are currently in Moscow to attend a meeting of SCO defence ministers on Friday. The Chinese side, as per the reports, had conveyed to the Indian mission its keenness to have a meeting between the two defence ministers.
However, no official ministry has confirmed the news yet.
The meeting could be an attempt to lessen the tension in Ladakh after fresh skirmishes were reported recently near Pangong Tso on August 29 and the following days. As per the Indian Army, the Chinese Army on August 29/30 tried to change the status at South Pangong lake when they were successfully thwarted by the Indian Army.
In retaliation, India occupied a number of strategic heights on the southern bank of Pangong lake. India also strengthened its presence in Finger 2 and Finger 3 areas in the region to thwart any Chinese actions. China has strongly objected to India’s move.
India has also stationed additional weapons to match the Chinese artillery strength in the region. India has also deployed highly skilled; Special Frontier Force aka Establishment 22 in the region.
