On Tuesday, August 13, a Kolkata court issued an arrest warrant for senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. The reason for the arrest warrant was his “Hindu Pakistan” remark.
Based on a petition filed by lawyer Sumeet Chowdhary, the Kolkata metropolitan magistrate court has issued the warrant against Tharoor.
What Do You Mean By Hindu Pakistan? What Did He Actually Say?
Speaking at an event in Thiruvananthapuram in his constituency on July 2019, MP had stated that the way BJP is working they would create a new Constitution which would make our a nation, much like Pakistan, where rights of minorities were ignored and not respected.
In his speech, Tharoor said, “The new one will be the one which will enshrine the principles of Hindu Rashtra, that will remove equality for minorities, that will create a Hindu Pakistan and that is not what Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and great heroes of freedom struggle fought for.”
Tharoor’s remarks provoked all the other parties who then asked Congress president Rahul Gandhi to apologise. As what Tharoor said was an attack on Indian Democracy and Hindus.
“If they have been able to win a repeat of their current strength in the Lok Sabha, then frankly, our democratic Constitution, as we understand, will not survive… because then they will have all the three elements they need to tear up the Constitution of India and write a new one.”
Tharoor continued and said, “And that will enshrine the principle of Hindu Rashtra, that will remove equality for the minorities, and that will create a Hindu Pakistan…and that is not what Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and great heroes of freedom struggle fought for.”
This could be just to provoke the opposition, but remarks like this certainly attack our democracy. Tell us what you think? Do you think that arrest warrant is overexertion? Or is it something necessary?
