Chandrayaan 2 Successfully Enters Moon’s Orbit After A Month-Long Space Voyage

Chandrayaan 2, India’s second lunar exploration mission has successfully manoeuvred into lunar orbit on August, 20, reported Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The probe is now on its way to reach the final destination i.e. the lunar South Pole.

“Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) of #Chandrayaan2 maneuver was completed successfully today (August 20, 2019). The duration of maneuver was 1738 seconds beginning from 0902 hrs IST,” tweeted ISRO.

The Woes

Cursing into the lunar orbit was quoted as one of the trickiest operations in the mission by ISRO. Notably, the scientists had to ensure precise velocity and accurate judgement of altitude over the moon for a smooth placement of the probe into the orbit. Even the slightest of error could have killed the mission.

“Following this, a series of orbit manoeuvres will be performed on Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft to enable it to enter its final orbit passing over the lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the moon’s surface,” ISRO said in a post.

“Subsequently, the lander will separate from the orbiter and enter into a 100 km x 30 km orbit around the moon. Then, it will perform a series of complex braking manoeuvres to soft land in the south polar region of the moon on September 7, 2019,” ISRO added.

Chandrayaan 2

What made the placement of Chandrayaan 2 into the lunar orbit complex was the fact that it blasted off at a velocity of 39,240 kilometers per hour, which is almost 30 times the speed at which sound travels through the air.

“It is like a gentleman with a rose in hand proposing to a lady who is dancing at a stunning speed of 3,600 kilometers per hour (almost five times the speed of an airplane), and not next door, but at a distance of 3.84 lakh kilometres away. If the couple have to meet, then the precision and accuracy is of utmost importance.” Explained the former director of the ISRO satellite centre M Annadurai.

Chandrayaan 2 Details

Chandrayaan 2 is India’s second mission to moon after Chandrayaan 1. Chandrayaan 2 had lifted off from the spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh on July 22. The probe that homes indigenously developed lunar orbiter, a lander, and a lunar rover named Pragyan is on its way to the near side of the Moon, in the South Polar Region that has been touched by only three countries including Russia, US and China.

The overall mission cost is Rs. 1,000 crore.
