Facing the pressure of an aging population thanks to its ‘One-Child Policy’ China has hit its lowest birth rate since the time the country emerged as an independent nation in 1949. The data from last year has revealed the findings.
Though China’s population stood at 1.4 billion by the end of 2019, increasing by 4.67 million from the year before its workforce continued to shrink. 2019 was the eighth consecutive year of decline of the workforce in China. This shrinking of the workforce is something that his hurting the government and the country badly.
The government relaxed its one-child policy in 2016 to allow people to have two children, but the change has not resulted in more pregnancies.
