#Chowkidar Chor Hai: Are Memes Actually Becoming a Part of Indian Political Campaigns?

Are memes becoming a part of political campaigns in India? This is a question I have been asking myself for a while now. I am confused to see those Indian political memes on Reddit (the front page of the internet) every day.

I decide to do some research, to know what’s happening in the real world and that’s how I came across a funny meme (hashtag) #chowkidarchorhai. Which kind of proves that memes have slowly become a major part of Indian political campaign.

Apart from being hilarious and cool, these #chowkidarchorhai memes are also very informative. Allowing others to decide which political party (BJP or Congress) is less fake. Before we get into the memes, let me first brief you what #chowkidarchorhai actually means.

#chowkidarchorhai what does it mean?

Since last month there is a lot going on in our country. Pulwama attack and upcoming Lok Sabha election being the center of attraction. Not just Indian media but also the international media houses are covering these two topics. Everyone wants to know India’s next move towards terrorism as well as who is going to be the next Prime Minister.

Believe it or not, there is a lot of hype around these topics.

Every political party has started its campaigns to attract as many votes. Coming back to the Chowkidar chor hai meme, the credit goes to Rahul Gandhi. There is no doubt that he has been constantly supplying meme creators with content. And this time it is a slogan.

Let’s get to the root of it.

During a rally in Dehradun, Rahul Gandhi made a demeaning comment on Narendra Modi by saying, “Chowkidar chor hai,” to target the controversial Rafale deal.

But the tables turned and it kind of backfired on Rahul.
PM Narendra Modi started his own campaign by changing his Twitter username that now reads, Chowkidar Narendra Modi. And to support Modi, other BJP leaders also changed their Twitter usernames to Chowkidar Amit Shah, Chowkidar Piyush Goyal, etc.

You can find many interesting debates on this hashtag (#chowkidarchorhai). But if you don’t like debates because politics is not your cup of tea, you can sure as hell check out the memes that are apparently quite informative. (and funny)

In Conclusion:

It’s hard to judge who is making false promises. Certainly, there are bad things that have happened during Modi’s government but there have also been major achievements. The whole ordeal is very confusing. At this point, who should people support?

If you know who is right and who is fake help me to make my mind and feel free to comment!
