Delhi Government To Charge ‘Corona Fee’ On Liquor From Today

The Delhi Government has said that it will charge “Corona Fee” from anyone heading to buy liquor from Tuesday in the Capital. The decision comes a day after thousands of people stood in queues outside liquor shops to buy liquor across the country as the government allowed the states and UTS to open standalone liquor shops.

Many people were also seen violating the norms set by the government while buying alcohol, including social distancing.

Here’s what Corona Fee on liquor is all about.

As per the latest Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) orders, over 150 goverenemtn-run liquor shops have been allowed to open in Delhi from 9 AM to 6:30 PM.

Anyone buying alcohol now will have to pay an additional 70 per cent of the maximum retail price on all categories of liquor sold through retail licensees.

In simple terms, if a liquor bottle with a pre-tax MRP costs Rs 1000, you will now have to pay Rs 1700. The rules will be liable from Tuesday morning as per the orders.

The shops are only opened to allow income to the government that has been hit severely due to lockdown. The Delhi government has to bear a loss of 3,200 crores in April due to the lockdown.
