Durga Puja: This Pandal In Kolkata Will Worship Woman Migrant Workers Idols To Pay Tribute To Them

The 9-day festivities of Durga Puja are all set to begin from 17 October and states across India are decking up to celebrate their first festival post lockdown and West Bengal is no different.

Interestingly, Durga Puja in West Bengal is not just about rituals but much more. Durga Puja pandals in West Bengal every year are themed to represent modern culture and changes in the society and this year is no different.

Going by the trend, this year, a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata has decided to replace the idol of Goddess Durga with that of a migrant worker to highlight the plight that migrant women had to face during the lockdown and how bravely they overcome the same.

The decision has been taken by the Barisha Club Durga Puja committee in Behala, Kolkata.

The entire scenery entails a mother and her four kids who would be worshiped this year as Goddess Durga, Saraswati, Laxmi and Ganesh.

In the scenery, the mother, carrying daughter, is followed by her other daughters one with an owl to represent Laxmi and the other a duck, Saraswati’s chosen ‘vaahan’. A fourth idol with the head of an elephant will represent Lord Ganesha.

The mother with her four children can be seen walking towards a small traditional image of a goddess with 10 hands inside a halo looking for relief.

“The goddess is the woman who braved the scorching sun and hunger and penury along with her children. She is looking for food, water and some relief for her children,” artist of the migrant mother’s statue, Rintu Das, told The Telegraph.

People are lauding the effort and unique idea.
