e-Shram Portal News: Over 2.5 Crore Informal Workers Registered On The Portal

The Labor Ministry said that over 2.5 crore informal workers have registered on the e-Shram portal. The e-Shram portal was inaugurated on August 26, 2021. The Labor Ministry statement states, “More than 2.5 crore registrations have been done so far on the portal.”

The e-Shram portal is the first portal that keeps the database of unorganized workers which includes construction workers, migrant workers, gig and platform workers. Bhupender Yadav, the Labour and Employment Minister informed that the 4th week was marked by a galloping registration of unorganized workers, crossing over 1.71 crores, and the 5th week has crossed more than 2.51 crore workers registration on this portal.

The Economic Survey, 2019-20, estimated 38 crore workers are engaged in the unorganized sector and employment. Earlier, the union minister flagged off the fieldwork of the Area Frame Establishment Survey (AFES) on the occasion of the 101st Foundation Day of Labour Bureau at Shram Bureau Bhawan, Chandigarh.

The Labour and Employment Minister also said that following the motto of “Mehnat Ko Samman, Adhikar Ek Saman”, the Government is focused on the welfare of workers through evidence-based policymaking. During the event, Yadav mentioned that data on all parts of labour is vital and has been collected scientifically for evidence-based policymaking.

The minister also has discussions with the State Labour Ministers, Labour Secretaries & Commissioners of States of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh & UTs of Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in respect of the progress to the registration of unorganized workers under e-Shram portal and preparedness of States/UTs on implementation of various schemes and reforms.

The minister approved and presented the ESIC Covid Relief Scheme letters to the dependents of the people who lost their lives because of a pandemic.
