Leather products are imfamous for both, endangering the lives of millions of animals and also harming the environment. As per PETA, as many as 1 billion cows, calves, lambs, pigs and sheep are killed to produce leather every year.
However, happens to be, there is a way through which leather can be made without killing innocent animals.
Two entrepreneurs, leading the way, have found a new way to give the world leather products that are vegetarian in nature. Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cazaraz have found a way to create fabric using cactus and have named it Desserto.
Cactus is known for its rigidity, which when fully processed feels like genuine leather. Also, the fact that cactus contains a lack of moisture helps to make leather without needing much water. The cactus leather is biodegradable and thus helps fight climate change woes naturally.
The company, Adriano Di Marti, which produces the leather claims to offer the same in various colours to match your wardrobe. The brand has successfully fabricated car seats, bags, shoes and even apparel using vegan leather to meet all your leather needs without plaguing nature.
Moreover, the products are free of toxic chemicals, phthalates and PVC. In terms of pricing, the creators have set the Cactus leather on par with genuine leather.
“The idea of using this raw material was conceived because this plant does not need any water to grow, and there is plenty of it throughout the Mexican Republic. Also, symbolically, it represents all of us Mexicans and everybody knows it,”says the Mexican entrepreneurs.
