Face Of Government In Maharashtra To Be Clear Today, Uddhav Likely To Become CM

Close to one month after the results of assembly elections were announced the suspense of government formation in Maharashtra is finally looking to come to an end. With the NCP-Shiv Sena-Congress coalition already announcing that they would form the government in the state, the question was about the distribution of portfolios and that “who would be the CM”?

Meeting was held on Thursday between the leaders of Congress and NCP where a common acceptance on the name of Uddhav Thackrey as the Chief Minister of the state is said to have been arrived.

The meeting on Thursday was held at the residence of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar in Delhi. The two pre-poll coalition partners (Congress and NCP) discussed about the shape and structure of the new government with the new partner Shiv Sena.

One thing that seems clear is that Shiv Sena would get a CM for a full 5-year term with possibilities of Deputy CMs. Meanwhile, the name of the new coalition of the three parties is also said to have been finalized. ‘Maha Vikas Aghadi’ would be the name of the alliance as per the sources.

Who Wants What?

While the rounds of meetings between the coalition partners are carried one might wonder why the final announcement in regards to the face of the new government are made. The reason for that is the negotiations that are going on for various portfolios.

Shiv Sena wants their MLAs to get urban development, PwD, home department, education, and rural development portfolios. While the NCP has an eye on home, finance, PwD, water resources, and rural development.

Both Congress and NCP want there MLA to be the speaker, with the Congress also expressing desire to get finance, rural development, and revenue. These overlapping demands for portfolios have been the reasons why there has been no clear cut announcement by the respective party leaders about the government.

Congress has put forward the 14-14-14 formula for portfolio distribution which calls for equal distribution of departments among the parties. Earlier on Thursday Congress leader and former Maharashtra CM Prithviraj Chavan addressed the press conference.

Chavan said that “there is complete unanimity on all issues”. A meeting would be held with the Shiv Sena on Friday, after which, a decision would be announced”. Now all eyes are set on the meeting post which the face of government is expected to get clear on Friday.
