Delight For Kashmiri Hindus? Government Passes Order Allowing Indians To Buy Land In J&K With Immediate Effect

The Union Minister on Wednesday, in a gazette notification, notified that Indians can now buy land in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect. The order comes approximately a year and a half after the abrogation of Article 370 in the valley that divided the state into two union territories.

The home ministry notified that the order will be called the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Adaptation of Central Laws) Third Order, 2020.

Reacting to the amendment in the land laws, National Conference Omar Abdullah in a sarcastic comment, said that “J&K is now up for sale”.

“Unacceptable amendments to the land ownership laws of J&K. Even the tokenism of domicile has been done away with when purchasing non-agricultural land & transfer of agricultural land has been made easier. J&K is now up for sale & the poorer small land holding owners will suffer,” Abdullah tweeted.

To our understanding, the change in the land laws might prompt investment in households in the state including inspiring Kashmiri Hindus to return to the UT years after they were forced to flee the same back after 1989. Also, development in the state would mean opportunities and opportunities might inspire people to work for a living rather than kill for a living.

However, these developments must incline with environmental sustainability to ensure Jammu and Kashmir doesn’t lose its precious environmental aura.
