FIFA WC Qualifiers: India Secures Draw Against Qatar, Keeps WC Qualifying Hopes Alive

Recovering from a heartbreaking loss against Oman in the opening encounter the “Blue Tigers” managed to hold Asian Champion Qatar to a goalless draw. Pitted against the hosts in their own turf it was always a one-sided battle with Qatar being the dominant force.

India came into this game with four changes in the side that played Oman last Thursday. Ranked a lowly 103rd in the FIFA ranking India was no match to the 62nd ranked Qatar. However, effective defense and clever positioning near the goalpost helped India pull off this unexpected result.

Sandhu The Star

If you would say that it was one-man effort in pulling off this draw for India then you would not be wrong.  Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu who was apparently the acting captain in absence of the regular captain Sunil Chettri was the star of the day. With more than 24 attacks on Indian goal post by Qatar Sandhu waskept  busy throughout the game. His exceptional goalkeeping skills became the savior for India.




Bangladesh Up Next

With one point in two games as a result of a loss and draw India would look to build on this momentum to garner some points in upcoming home game. India next plays a fairly low ranked Bangladesh (FIFA Ranking 192) on October 15th in Kolkata. With eyes set on a win, India is expected to give Bangladesh a hammering in their upcoming encounter.

Post-match the Indian team give a shoutout to the fans who supported the “Blue Tigers”. Players were happy and satisfied with the results. The celebrations continued as the players and coaching staff shared pleasantries. The win has probably raised hopes among fans in regards to India’s run-up to the 2022 FIFA WC.
