Is PM Modi Waiting For The Right Time In Maharashtra?

After a month-long pulsating drama – for the broadcasters and the voters – Uddhav Thackeray was finally sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Thursday, November 28. However keeping in mind the perception of people about politics, to most of us, it seems like the drama in Maharashtra has just begun aftermath of the sworn-in ceremony.

The Love For The Chair

The was undeniably a lot of talking about the way Fandavis was – under the darkness and the wee hours of the day – sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra besides the Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar sharing the Deputy CM post. The move caught most of us by surprise including some Bharatiya Janata Party leaders as well.

And when you think and think hard, it appears no less than a master plan from the side of NCP to me.

Most of us are aware that as soon as Ajit Pawar held the post of Deputy CM, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) dropped 9 corruption cases against him. While it can be termed as a gift by BJP to Ajit, we can’t ignore the possibility of everything that happened last Saturday as a well-scripted plan by “whole” NCP. In a nutshell, the tactic to clear Ajit’s name from the cases.

Secular Vs Hindutvavadi

Well, that’s that, but currently, the bigger question that most of us will ask is whether the three-wheeler government would be able to work together in Maharastra?

For obviously, the contradictions that exist between ‘Secular’ Congress and NCP and ‘Hindutvavadi’ Shiv Sena can’t be ignored. It is a well-known fact that NCP-Shiv Sena-Congress shares different voter bases.

As Congress is majorly dependent on the Muslim and Punjab side population for its existence, its coalition with Shiv Sena – that works on Hindutvavadi terms – could erode that base.

Like for example during the decision-making process, what would congress entertain if a particular scheme or project doesn’t take into account the Muslim population? Not saying it shouldn’t, of course, each one of us shall be weighed as an Indian, but we can’t ignore the instances where not every community enjoys the benefits of a scheme.

An example would-be citizen amendment bill that Sena’s allies are determined to scuttle.

If such a situation arises, will the coalition criticise its own alliances? Well, if that happens, can we eye a stable government in the state of Maharastra for the next five years?

The Current Scenario

Everything penned above are possibilities in the future. For the moment, the three parties will be individually judged by their respective vote bases. Thus, the three sides need to show maturity in their decision-making process.

Also, for BJP, it needs to relax in terms of aggressive politics and work on issues that crave attention. Because if they don’t, the size of their power – which has already shrunk to terrifying numbers – would further shrink.

Working with Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani’s ideology seems to be the need of the moment. A Chanakya approach that would lead to developments rather than unwanted headlines is the next need.

And as far as the financial capital of the country is concerned, it still may have to wait patiently for what it voted for.
