Is Rs 2,000 Note Being Demonetized From 1st January 2020, Here Is The Truth

Ever since its introduction in the aftermath of 2016 demonetization drive ₹ 2,000 note has had its share of stories associated with its withdrawal. However, this time the news of its demonetization from 1st January 2020 has surfaced.

A message is doing rounds on WhatsApp these days which says that the RBI would withdraw the ₹ 2,000 note from the 1st of January and would re-introduce the ₹ 1, 000 note. The message further reads that 31st December 2019 is the last date to exchange the ₹ 2,000 note.

Many of you might have got this message as a forward an might be worried about a second drive of unannounced demonetization. However, there is nothing to worry. The message being circulated is a fake message. There is no official notice from the RBI stating that the ₹ 2,000 would be demonetized.

Actually the fake news has been circulated in this regard since October this month when an RTI reply unveiled the fact that the RBI had stopped the printing of Rs 2000 notes. RBI confirmed that the news nothing but fake as they don’t have any such plans.

Further speaking in Rajyasabha on the matter Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur cornered the news and clarified that government is not going this way and hence there is nothing to worry about.

So, the next time you get this message on WhatsApp just delete it or ignore it as the authenticity of such news would only be established when RBI puts some official notice in this regard in the public domain.
