Kerala Gets It First Water Taxi In The Backwaters Of Alappuzha

Kerala has finally launched its much-awaited water taxi service on the backwaters of Alappuzha and video and pictures of the same are going viral on the internet.

The video of the first of its kind service in the country was shared by ANI with the caption, ‘Kerala: State’s first water taxi service, launched in the backwaters of Alappuzha, ferries passengers. Catamaran diesel-powered craft, with seating capacity for 10 passengers, is 1st in a series of 4 boats, that State Water Transport Department is planning to introduce’.

The taxi, as reports suggest, can carry up to 10 passengers. To ensure minimal pollution, the taxis are tucked with solar panels. The government believes that the taxi will help promote tourism in the region.

Benny, the helmsman of the boat is excited to be a part of the crew of the state’s first water taxi. “The boat has a power steering and I am happy to have got selected for the service. I think the water taxi will definitely boost the tourism sector in the Kuttanad region,” he said.

The water taxi can run at a speed of 30 km per hour.

“It is unique in two aspects. One in terms of service. Multiple state governments have announced starting water taxis in the past, it has been launched in Kerala now. About the boat itself, it’s a catamaran high-speed boat. All electrical machinery is powered by the sun. All auxiliary loads are powered by solar panels,” he said.
