Six times World Boxing Champion, Mary Kom, had to settle for a Bronze at the Women’s World Championships in Russia’s Ulan-Ude after she lost to Busenaz Cakiroglu in the semi-final.
Cakiroglu, the European champion, was declared to have won the bout 4-1 which ended Kom’s run to the final. Kom now is the only boxer to have eight world medals to her name, including 6 Gold and a silver at the World Championships.
The match, however, at Ulan-Ude was full of drama. At the end of the fight, India raised a Yellow card to appeal against the referee’s decision which declared Cakiroglu as the winner. However, the same was turned down and not accepted by the technical committee.
With the win, Kom went past Felix Savon record of seven World Championships medals in total. This is also her first World Championships medal in the 51kg category.
Meanwhile, several other boxers including Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Manju Rani (48kg) will be up for a fight in Russia and will all look to reach the finals.
