In Mumbai, a city of 23 million, only 50,000 individuals are employed as sanitation workers. They are working in difficult conditions every single day to tackle the enormous amount of waste that Mumbai generates. In front of his fellow classmates and their parents, the kid starts the poem with the line Mera baba desh chalata hai. As it draws a slight off-reaction from the audience, he continues with the poem adding his father is not a politician or a doctor, or an army but Agar nahi jaayega mera baba kaam par, to ruk jaayega India ka har ghar.

The heart-wrenching video shared on Ratan Tata’s IGTV narrates the story of a mere 50,000 sewage workers that clean the waste generated by the Mumbai City of 23 million people.

The video then cuts to his father going down into sewage of dirt and cleaning the same as he recites “sometimes I worry my father will lose to these diseases,” he says.

This heart-wrenching ad, shared by Ratan Tata on Instagram, is part of Tata Trusts’ initiative ‘Mission Garima’. The same aims to “reduce manual intervention of the workers with sewage and waste”.

“Mission Garima is working to provide safe, hygienic and humane working conditions for sanitation workers who are severely affected doing the unimaginable for the city so that we may find it clean!” Ratan Tata writes.

As per a report, as many as 100-150 sewage workers die every year as they aren’t provided proper safety gear when they enter the gutters.

Through the video, Tata requests people to segregate their biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste to reduce the burden on sanitation workers.
