NotebookLM, Google’s New AI Powered Notes Making App

Google has introduced a new AI-powered note-taking app, titled NotebookLM. This co-pilot will help you to note important things faster so that you don’t miss on things you want to learn later. The launch of this app was announced by Google I/O in a major event this year in May. Named Project Tailwind, it is currently an experimental product collection of Google Labs.

Google Introduced NotebookLM, an AI Assistive Tool

Google has expressed its intention to revolutionize the concept of note-taking software by envisioning a novel approach that harnesses the capabilities of a robust language model. Currently, this cutting-edge AI functionality is exclusively accessible through Google Docs, with assurances from the renowned tech company that additional formats will be incorporated shortly. It is important to note that NotebookLM is presently limited to users based in the United States, who can gain access by joining a waitlist specifically created for Google Labs.

“NotebookLM is an experimental product designed to use the power and promise of language models paired with your existing content to gain critical insights, faster. Think of it as a virtual research assistant that can summarize facts, explain complex ideas, and brainstorm new connections — all based on the sources you select”, wrote Google in its blog post.

How is Google NotebookLM Different from Other AI Apps?

Through the introduction of NotebookLM, Google endeavours to address, or at the very least alleviate, a significant challenge encountered with artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT and Bard: the issue of “hallucination.” This phenomenon occurs when a large language model (LLM) generates erroneous information and presents it with unwavering confidence as an accurate response.

To combat this concern, Google has implemented a technique known as “source-grounding.” The company asserts that this process creates a personalized AI that possesses knowledge pertinent to the individual user. By leveraging source grounding, the language model can scrutinize the user’s notes and references to provide informed answers. Nonetheless, Google emphasizes the importance of exercising caution and encourages users to verify the AI’s responses against the source material, avoiding blind reliance.

What Google’s New AI, NotebookLM, Can Do?

Presently, this AI can perform only three major tasks:

1. Summary Generation

Upon integrating a Google Doc into NotebookLM, users will have the capability to generate a comprehensive summary encompassing essential topics and pertinent questions. This feature empowers individuals to extract key information and insights from their documents with ease and efficiency.

2. Can Answer Questions Related to Notes

NotebookLM enables users to ask questions about their uploaded documents. For example, a writer working on a biography can upload research notes and ask for a summary of the interactions between Houdini and Conan Doyle.

3. Craft New Ideas

With NotebookLM, users can generate fresh ideas by leveraging their uploaded documents. For instance, a content creator can upload their ideas for a new video and request the AI to generate a script based on those concepts. This feature facilitates creative exploration and aids users in the process of generating compelling content.
