As the world has come to a standstill amidst coronavirus outbreak, here is some news that will cheer you up. Happens to be, as per a recent study, scientists have been noticing that the ozone layer has finally begun to heal itself.c
For the unaware, the ozone layer is a protective shield that prevents harmful UV rays from the sun from directly entering the earth’s surface. The ozone layer is also crucial for maintaining a balance of climatic conditions and also to keep the ocean currents on their natural course.
However, over the decades, a thinning in the ozone layer has been noticed due to increased human activities and the release of ozone-depleting substances. However, the ozone layer has now begun to repair itself. And the credits for the same goes to the Montreal Protocol.
The protocol was signed between different countries in the year 1987 to minimise the use of ozone-depleting substances. These substances are emitted out of refrigerators, air conditioners and industrial solvents and play a role in the thinning of the ozone layer.
Pause And Playback
A reduce emission of these has led to a pause in the depletion of the ozone and it begins to heal itself on its own. This is actually very good for the healing of the hole over Antarctica, which has send off the current in the oceans and lead to dry spells in some parts of the world.
Also, self-healing has also helped reverse the jet streams or air currents which had been forced to move south owing to the hole in the Ozone layer.
As this is just a beginning, the study states that countries must adhere and invest more in such measures to completly heal ozone.
