Creating history India’s boxing star Amit Panghal became the 1st Indian to entre the finals of World Boxing Championships. The Asian champion defeated Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov 3-2. The challenge for Panghal in his run-up to a historic Gold would not be easy.

The Naib Subedar of the Indian Army Panghal would face reigning Olympic champion Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov in the summit bout on Saturday. The Uzbek defeated Frenchman Billal Bennama in his semifinal clash.

Early in the day, Manish Kaushik (63kg) signed off with a bronze medal after going down in the semifinals in Ekaterinburg. Before this India has never won more than one bronze medal in a single edition. Vijender Singh (2009), Vikas Krishan (2011), Shiva Thapa (2015) and Gaurav Bidhuri (2017) have bought the honors for India earlier.

Panghal won the Asian Championships gold this year after he moved up to the 52kg category following the dropping of 49kg from the Olympic roster. The performance of the boxing star has raised medal hopes from him in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
