Philippines Approves Purchase Of BrahMos Missile

Philippines has approved contract of 374.96 million dollars for purchase of BrahMos Missile. The contract is for shore based anti-ship variant of the supersonic cruise missile system.

Currently discussions are doing on with several South Asian countries. As per latest update Secretary of National Defence of Philippines, Delfin Lorenzana has signed “Notice of Award” and the contract will be signed very soon.

Mr. Delfin said that. “As head of procuring entity (HOPE), I recently signed the Notice of Award for the Philippine Navy shore-based anti-ship missile acquisition project (BrahMos Missile). Negotiated with the Government of India, it includes the delivery of three batteries, training for operators and maintainers as well as the necessary Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) package.”

He added, “Conceptualised as early as 2017, the Office of the President approved its inclusion in the Horizon 2 Priority Projects in 2020. The coastal defence regiment of the Philippines Marines will be the primary employer of this modern strategic defense capability of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.”

Philippines have trained a special unit for operations of BrahMos Missile system. The contract for the missile system got delayed for few years due to budget constraints that emerged during Corona virus pandemic.

Department of National Defence of Philippines has also confirmed about the purchase and issued a copy of Notice of Award signed by Delfin Lorenzana on the official website of the department.

The letter issued on official website said, “This is to inform you that the proposal of BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd (BrahMos Missile). For the shore based anti-ship missile system acquisition project for the Philippine Navy, with a corresponding price proposal in the amount of dollar 374,962,800 is hereby accepted. You are hereby directed to provide, within 10 calendar days from receipt of this notice, the performance security in the form and amount stipulated in the terms of reference,”

BrahMos Missile is a joint collaboration between India and Russia and is capable of being launched from land, sea, sub-sea and air against surface and sea-based targets. The range of missile is capped at 290 km as per guidelines of Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
