PM Modi Visits Assam First Time After Massive Protest Against CAA

Having earlier declined the invitation to visit Assam for ‘Khelo India’ games the Prime Minister visited the state today. Assam which has served as a hot center of anti CAA protest saw home minister Amit Shah and PM Modi canceling their visit to the state.

This the first time since the CAA protest Prime Minister Modi visited the northeastern state. PM Modi visited Kokrajhar to celebrate the ‘Bodo Accord. Recently the Bodo peace deal, an accord between the government and the banned militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland was signed.

To mark its celebration the PM today visited the Bodo dominated Kokrajhar area of Assam. During the CAA protest, Assam saw violence where 3 people were reported dead. The protestors also forced the Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to be stuck at the airport during the protest. The CM convoy’s was also shown black flags.

PM during his visit also announced a Rs 1500 Crore development package for the upliftment of the Bodo areas in Assam. Bodo tribals which make up over 30 percent of Assam’s population, rule over close to 70 percent of non-Bodos. The Bodos see the peace pact with the government as a step closer to a separate state.
