Pollution is the elephant in the room, especially when we are talking about the metropolitan cities. Conditions are very harsh when we talk about the capital city of India.
Luckily the problem might get solved soon as the public works department (PWD) has started to make city roads and open spaces clean and green. In a hope to cut down the dust pollution from the city.
What is that I’m talking about?
The process of beautifying city roads started around two months ago. As PWD decided to plant the variety of trees on the central and side verges. They started with some of the most active roads of the city, ISBT Kashmere Gate Ring Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg are some of them.
Not just the city roads, but the department is seriously trying to make the city better. That’s why they have also started to plant trees in other open spaces that come under the PWD department. In total PWD manages 1,260 km roads in the city, planting seasonal flowering plants, creepers, shrubs and grass alongside roads to give them a fine look, not just this but it will also help to beat the city pollution.
This all comes under Delhi government’s Gree Budget initiative, that was announced last year in March by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia. Roads that are wider than 100 feet will get this new makeover. PWD is aiming to fill at least 500 km of the area with the clean and green trees.
These are the plants you can expect to see on the side of the road
Horticulture wing of the PWD department is settled on using 15 different varieties of plants. Red and yellow kaner, gurhal (Hibiscus), calliandra, bougainvillea, livistona palm, raphis palm, tecoma gaudichaudi, champa, ficus and hamelia are some of them.
According to the official from the horticulture wind, this project includes around 32 stretches of various PWD roads. They are planning to finish the project by the monsoon as it is the perfect season for plantation. Trees that have been already planted on the side of the roads will give a scenic view of Delhi roads by the time monsoon arrives.
