In what can be said as a step towards widening of women’s rights in a highly conservative setup Saudi King has allowed women to be a part of armed forces.
The move is a part of the kingdom’s broad program of economic and social reforms. Women were allowed to be a part of security forces last year, but the roles were limited to internal security matters.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman has initiated women’s reforms in face of the right to travel, drive, go abroad without consent of male “Guardian”, watch football matches etc.
The reforms are a part of Saudi’s effort to diversify its economy and thus there is a push to improve its image and attract tourists as part of the plan.
