SC Upholds Disqualification Of 17 Karnataka MLAs, Allows Them To Contest Polls

While the drama in Maharashtra’s politics continued triggering in the application of President’s rule a decision by the apex judiciary shifted the focus to Karnataka which was under a similar kind of situation last year.

Supreme Court (SC) today confirmed the disqualification of 17 Karnataka MLAs whose revolt caused the collapse of the Janata Dal Secular-Congress government paving the way for out throwing of HD Kumaraswamy as CM and crowning of BS Yediyurappa-led BJP government in the state. The MLAs are allowed to contest the by-polls.

“In a parliamentary democracy, morality is equally binding on the government and the opposition”, said SC while upholding the speakers’ decision of disqualification of MLAs.
