The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently informed us with a circular that soon NRIs can pay through UPI without needing to get an Indian mobile number.
No Need for Indian Mobile Numbers for NRIs to Use UPI
The NCPI governed all the authority to make this new UPI model possible before April 30. These efforts are focused towards providing the convenience of sending money to their loved ones or making transactions while being in the country for NRIs.
Furthermore, NPCI has made a statement in which the authority said, “that UPI participants must ensure only the accounts that are allowed as per the extant FEMA regulations are allowed to transact in UPI. NPCI also added that the anti-money laundering (AML) and combating of financing of terrorism (CFT) checks must be done.”
UPI is available to the NRIs living in Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, the USA, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the United Kingdom. So, now all of the NRIs can make UPI payments.
Mandar Agashe, the Founder and MD VC of Sarvatra Technologies, said, “the UPI onboarding and transaction facility being extended to Non-Resident account types like NRE/NRO is a welcome move. NPCI has currently issued a list of ten countries, including Singapore, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.”
So, How do NRIs Can Make UPI Payment Without Indian Mobile Numbers?
As per modifications that are going to be in effect, the NRIs can use their number or foreign numbers to register on the UPI app to make transactions. But before registering on the digital payment interfaces the NRIs will have to complete a one-time registration process with their banks.
So, NRIs will have to link their foreign mobile numbers with their Indian banks and this option will be available soon from The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
