Still haven’t linked your PAN and Aadhaar card? Read more – What will happen if you don’t link?

The deadline for linking your PAN and Aadhaar number, which carries a Rs 1,000 fine if not done by March 31, 2023, according to a circular issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Some services require that the two be linked.

According to a CBDT circular, “Rule 114AAA of the Income-tax Rules provides that if PAN of a person has become inoperative, he will not be able to furnish, intimate or quote his PAN and shall be liable to all the consequences under the Act for such failure.”

If you are planning to link your PAN with your Aadhaar now, then you are also liable to pay a late fee of ₹ 1,000 as the last date for linking your cards without penalty was June 30, 2022, which has already passed.

If the PAN and Aadhaar numbers are not linked, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) may become difficult. The Income Tax Department can also reject your ITR. The IT Department will also restrict you from filing your ITR, preventing you from receiving a tax refund.

If the two cards are not linked, accessing certain government services, such as obtaining subsidies, applying for a passport, and opening a bank account, may be difficult. When attempting to use these services, it may be difficult if the two documents are not linked. 

It may also be difficult to obtain a new PAN if it is not connected to Aadhaar. If you lose or damage your PAN card, it may be difficult to obtain a replacement without connecting the two papers. Significantly, when registering for a new PAN card, the government has made it necessary to submit the Aadhar card number. 

How to link your PAN card to your Aadhaar?

Online, an Aadhaar number may be connected to a Permanent Account Number (PAN). To connect the two, people can go to the Income Tax (I-T) Department’s official e-filing website. Individuals who do not feel comfortable connecting their PAN card to their Aadhaar online can do so through NSDL and UTITSL PAN service centres.
