Supported By Kohli, Sumit Nagal Wins His First Ever Grand Slam Match

Sumit Nagal recorded his first-ever Grand Slam win on Tuesday when he beat Bradley Klahn of the United States 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the opening round of the US Open. This means that he has become the first Indian to reach the second round of Grand Slam since 2013 in men’s single event.

Earlier, Somdev Devvarman had reached round 2 of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.

Sumit Nagal is supported personally by Virat Kohli and his foundation that helps nurture athletes. Thus after the win, he took on Twitter to thank his team — tagging India’s cricket captain Virat Kohli, the Virat Kohli Foundation among others.

In the first two sets, Nagal dominated his opponent until the latter, in the third set, dominated him. Thereafter, Nagal regained his focus and crushed the opponent 6-1 to wrap up the first-round US Open win and his maiden victory at a Grand Slam event.

Nagal had risen to fame when he defeated GOAT Roger Federer in the opening round of the US Open in 2019, eventually losing the encounter 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6.

Next, he will be up against World No.3 Dominic Thiem of Austria in the second round.
