Not as early we would have wanted, but it seems like justice is finally being served in the seven years old Nirbhaya gang-rape case as Tihar jail is quietly preparing to hang the convicts.
If reports are anything to go by, Tihar Jail officials have sought a hangman and ordered ropes hinting an execution of the convicts. However, the exact day when the convicts would be hanged remains a mystery.
For the unknown, the Nirbhaya case hails back to December 16, 2012, when she was gang-raped and tortured on a moving bus. The convicts had inserted an iron rod into her private part, thrashed her friend and dumped them on the streets.
Nirbhaya lost her battle with life at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital 13 days after the incident.
The accused in the case namely Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh and Ram Singh were arrested and sent to judicial custody soon after the incident. The ones to be hanged include the first four while Ram Singh had committed suicide in jail.
Ropes Ordered, Hangman Sought
As of now, Tihar’s officials have ordered 10 ropes from Bihar’s Buxar jail, which are made by the prisoners of the facility.
Besides ropes, Tihar has also sought a hangman from Uttar Pradesh. In a FAX to UP Anand Kumar, Director General (DG) of UP prison administration and reform services, Tihar has sought for a hangman. However, “The letter makes no mention of the convicts to be hanged but states there may be requirements.”
Tihar Jail had also carried out a test by hanging a dummy weighing 70-80kgs. The convicts will be executed in Jail Number 3.
As of now, the Supreme Court will hear convict Akshay Thakur’s petitions against the death sentence on December 17.
