What started as a boon has now become a curse, that’s why India has already banned Tik-Tok (video sharing mobile app) on android and ios devices.
Although, social media helps us all to stay connected with the world. But for a while now, these social media apps have become a nuisance for the government.
Indian government has already warned Whatsapp to make appropriate changes to restrict the broadcast of fake news on its platform. But in the case of Tik-Tok, there was no warning. After Madras High Courts order, the government has asked Google and Apple to take down Tik-Tok app from their play store.
Tik-Tok removed from play store
Android or Apple smartphone users will no longer be able to install this Chinese video-sharing app in their phones. Though, people who have already installed this app on their phone can continue using it without any problem.
Earlier this month on April 3, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court appealed the Centre to ban TikTok app. According to Madurai Bench, the app is promoting “pornographic and inappropriate content,” to its teen users.
Realizing that the inappropriate content on this app can harm the youngsters in many ways, HC ordered central government to ban the app.
But is it a temporary ban or permanent ban?
After Madras HC, now the case has been moved to the SC. Last week, ByteDance (parent company of Tik-Tok) challenged the HC decision in the Supreme Court. Saying that this ban will violate the law of freedom to speech rights in India.
Company has hired a senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi to appeal from their side. Supreme Court decided to stay the with High Court’s decision and refused to impose a hold on HC decision to ban the app.
To this official at ByteDance reacted by saying, “We have faith in the Indian Judicial system and the stipulations afforded to social media platforms by the Information Technology (Intermediaries Guidelines) Rules, 2011…We have been stepping up efforts to take down objectionable content.”
What do you think? Is this ban appropriate?
Tik-Tok is a short video sharing app, it has more than 54 million monthly active users in India. It has allowed many users to gain social status, some of them even become a social media influencers. On the other side in a recent video, a teenage kid shot dead with making a Tik-Tok video.
