The Supreme Court has sentenced four months to jail to fugitive liquor baron and businessman Vijay Mallya. The court has given the jail sentence in a 2017 contempt case.

The Supreme Court has given the following order due to the non-appearance of Mallya and has found him guilty of contempt. The apex court has also imposed a fine of Rs.2000.If the fine is not paid as per the given deadline, Mallya will get two additional months of imprisonment. The fine needs to be deposited within four weeks to the Supreme Court legal services authority.“He did not show any remorse.” the court has stated during the order.

A bench of three judges including Justices UU Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, and PS Narasimha passed the order.” To uphold the majesty of justice, we must impose adequate punishment,” judges said. The court has directed Mallya to deposit 40 million USD with interest within four weeks and asked the authorities to take attachment proceedings in case of his default. Mallya is presently pursuing appeals in the United Kingdom to overturn a bankruptcy order imposed on him by the High Court of Justice in London in July 2021.

What Was The Bank Loan Default Case?

In the Bank Loan Default Case of Rs.9000 crores, Mallya is accused with his Kingfisher Airlines. In this case, a plea was filed by a consortium of banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) before the Supreme Court seeking contempt action against Mallya. It was stated that Mallya had transferred USD 40 million to his children(son Siddharth Mallya and daughters Leanna Mallya and Tanya Mallya) and had violated the court orders. He was found guilty of contempt in 2017. In August 2020, the court directed Mallya to appear before it and dismissed his plea. Again on March 10,  the Supreme Court reserved its order after hearing the case in absentia due to Mallya’s failure to appear in court.
