States including Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha on Wednesday announced wearing of face mask compulsory for people. The orders are that anyone who fails to adhere to this order and is seen not wearing a mask outside can be arrested.
In Jammu and Kashmir, a similar rule was announced on Wednesday but has been limited to all officers, staff and visitors to the Civil Secretariat. In Ladakh, the rule applies to the general public as well.
The first state to announce wearing a mask compulsory on Wednesday was Maharashtra. The state, which has the most number of coronavirus cases said that the one who doesn’t follow can be arrested under Section 188 (disobedience of order duly promulgated by a public servant). The punishment under this section is 6 months imprisonment.

Delhi government, on the other hand, announced the move to make mask compulsory after a high-level meeting. The government also announced to seal 20 hotspots of coronavirus cases to curb the spread of the virus.
In UP, not wearing a mask, as of now, carries a penalty.
All this comes after PM Modi, in a meeting with other political parties said that lifting of lockdown doesn’t seem possible soon. On the 11th, he will have a meeting with state chief ministers, after which a decision on the lockdown will be taken.

Other states in India might soon make wearing a face mask compulsory in the coming days. Coronavirus cases in India currently stand at over 5,700 confirmed cases and 166 reported deaths. 473 people have recovered in India so far.
