Your Step-by-Step Guide For Knowing And Verifying Your TAN

The Income Tax Department issues TANs, or Tax Deduction and Collection Account Numbers, which are 10-digit alphanumeric numbers. Anyone involved with the collection or withholding of tax at source (TCS and TDS) must comply with this requirement. A TAN is necessary for those who are in charge of deducting TDS or who must gather TCS.

Getting a TAN number is required to file any kind of IT return, including TDS and TCS. Penalties may apply if the TAN number is not provided when filing IT returns. It is therefore imperative that you apply as soon as possible for your Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number.

How To Identify Your TAN Number

  • Step 1: Log in to the “e-Filing” Portal.
  • Step 2: From the ‘Quick Links’ Section, select the ‘Know Your TAN’ hyperlink.
  • Step 3: Either TAN or Name can be used to do a TAN search.
  • Step 4: Select the State and “Category of Deductor” from the dropdown menus, if any.
  • Step 5: Type in your “Mobile Number” and “Name” or “TAN” according to what applies.
  • Step 6: Enter your mobile number and click “Continue” to get the OTP.
  • Step 7: To read the TAN information, enter the OTP and click the “Validate” button.

How To Verify Your TAN Number

There are two ways to submit a TAN application:

  • Offline: Fill out Form 49B in duplicate and send it to any TIN-FC to apply for a TAN. The Protean (previously NSDL eGov) TIN website has the addresses of TIN FCs.
  • Online: As an alternative, you can use the Protean (previously NSDL eGov) TIN website to apply for a TAN online.

For whom is TAN applicable?

A TAN is necessary for those who must pay commissions or salaries to other people. This includes organizations like the federal or state governments, local government units, statutory or autonomous agencies, businesses, corporate branches or divisions, people, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), individual owners, businesses, partnerships, or trusts.
