Remember the clay cups people used to drink tea in? Well, those are still capable of adding flavour to a sip of tea but have been replaced with the plastic and ceramic cups because the latter are cheaper.
While they might be cheaper for the pocket, but they do cost the environment as plastic is one of the most harmful things for the environment and its sustainability for reasons well known.
Thus, a solution to the problem can be these edible cups. A group of people running a tea kiosk on Mudurai’s West Masi Street have come up with the idea of selling tea in edible cups.
The customer can drink chai in the chocolate flavoured cups and once done, can munch the cup leaving nothing behind to worry about. This is RS Pathy Nilgiri tea kiosk that opened just a month ago in the city.
Each cup holds 60ml of tea and can survive for at least 10 minutes. Eating the cup is like eating 2-3 biscuits. Since opening on June 15, the shop has been selling a minimum of 500 cups a day.
Tamil Nadu had banned the use of single-use plastic in the city in 2019, which is when Vivek began brewing this unique idea.
Across the world, such innovations are pretty famous. Like restaurants in Italy serve beverages with an edible straw intact. These straws are called pasta straws. These straws could last for up to an hour, are tasteless, and can be left on the compost heap when people are finished with them.
