In an attempt to boost toll collection via digital mode, the Government of India has said that FASTags will be provided free of cost from February 15 to February 29. The FASTags sold only by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) come under the scheme.
In order to purchase the same, all you need to do is reach out to an authorised physical point-of-sales location with valid registration documents. Earlier, the transport ministry had announced free NHAI FASTags from November 22-December 15, 2019.
The Government of India had introduced FASTags to make toll collection across National Highways easier and faster. For the unknown, a FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses Radio Frequency Identification technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it or directly toll owner.
Under FASTag, each vehicle, that opts for the same, gets a frequency identification sticker that is usually attached to a vehicle’s windscreen. This, when attached, will deduct the toll payment from an individual’s bank account without needing them to stop at the toll plaza.
The government of India has said that at least a fourth of the toll plaza lanes must allow cash and FASTags payments.
