The Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which is also busy laying self-regulation guidelines for OTT platforms, has recently summoned Amazon Prime officials over allegations of the platform hurting Hindu sentiments through its web series Tandav.
“The ministry has called executives of the video streaming service and decided to seek an explanation from them over the matter,” the government official said.
Earlier on Sunday, several BJP leaders including leader Ram Kadam, MP Manoj Kotak have filed a complaint against the makers and actors of the web series. Kadam had alleged that in the beginning scene of the web series, there is a dialogue exchange where Hindu deity Lord Shiva has been ridiculed.
Here is the video that has caused an uproar among one section of society:
Kadam, further goes on to allege, “why are the Hindu gods and goddesses being disrespected through various films and web series. The latest example is the web series Tandav. Saif Ali Khan is yet again a part of such series that hurts Hindu sentiments. Director Ali Abbas Zafar will have to remove the part where Lord Shiva is being made fun of. Actor Zeshan Ayub will have to apologise. And till the time the necessary changes aren’t made, BJP will continue to boycott Tandav.”
“Why is Bollywood disrespecting Hindu gods and goddesses in their films? This has been going on for a long time. Now in the web series called Tandav, an actor is disrespecting our Lord Shiva by holding the Trishul and Damru in his hands. This will not be allowed. Bollywood should listen carefully. If our feelings and sentiments are hurt like this, and anyone dares to do that then you’ll be beaten up with a shoe in the middle of the square. This series has to be boycotted at the earliest, and the director, producer and actor should apologise by kneeling and with folded hands,” Kadam adds.
Meanwhile, Manoj Kotak has also termed the web series insensitive and a medium to encourage violence, drugs, abuse, hate and vulgarity.
Tandav, for the unaware, is a political drama written by Gaurav Solanki and is directed, written and created by Ali Abbas Zafar and Himanshu Kishan Mehra.
