An armed, unidentified man, caused unrest near the Jamia Milia Islamia University in Delhi on Thursday after he opened fire at the crowd protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). One student was reported injured in the incident.
In the video, shared online, a man can be seen waving a gun and shouting “Yeh lo aazadi (here’s your freedom)” at the protesters. The man was soon arrested by the police and escorted from the area.
The man who has been shoot was seen being taken away to the hospital. His hands were seen drenched in blood.
For the unaware, Shaheeh Bagh, where thousands of women and children are protesting against the CAA, NRC and NPR, is not far away from Jamia University. Earlier, a man with a gun had entered Shaheen Bagh but was soon overpowered by the people there.
The uneasy situations are the result of a wave of ongoing protests against the government’s decision to give citizenship on the basis of religion under the Amended Citizenship Act.
As per the amended Act, persecuted non-Muslims communities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who had entered India before 31st December 2014 would not be considered an illegal migrant.
