Zoom Video Conferencing App Is Not A ‘Safe Platform’, Says Government

As online video classes and conferencing have has seen a surge amidst ‘lockdown’ the app Zoom has got popular. The video conferencing app has seen an over 100% increase in its user these days. However, concerns about the privacy and safety of the platform have been flagged off by the users.

The Indian government has now come clear on it. Zoom meeting app is not a safe platform for video conference, said the government today. The government also issued an advisory for its users. “Zoom is not a safe platform even for the usage of individuals a detailed advisory has already been issued by CERT-India,” the home ministry said in its new advisory.

The government issued guidelines for its private users some of which are:

  • Prevent unauthorized entry in the conference room and even malicious activity by authorized participants on terminals of the other participants.
  • Avoid DOS attacks by restricting users through passwords and access grants.

The app has issues relating to privacy and as well as security from the beginning. Like TikTok, servers of Zoom are mostly located in China. The government says that the app has significant weaknesses and indulges in dubious practices.   The government ha already banned the app for its officials and official purposes. “Leading business houses and governments and others who need confidentiality should not be using this software“, said an officer from home ministry’s cyber unit.

Google has reportedly banned the Zoom app from all employees’ computers over security vulnerabilities. Singapore has banned teachers using Zoom after hackers posted obscene images on screens. The app has also been banned for usage in Germany, Singapore, and Taiwan.
